Although the literature to support the effectiveness of chiropractic care in treating ear infections (otitis media) is for the most part inconclusive, there are no doubt many success stories out there. For example, there are many news stories and video clips posted on YouTube of people very happy with the results.

If you read our previous article analyzing the pros and cons of pediatric chiropractic and are considering this approach on your child it is time to do a little research of your own.

Choosing a chiropractor

As with any other medical approach, the chances of obtaining positive results with this technique are highly increased by choosing the right professionals. When considering chiropractic adjustments as a treatment for otitis media, make sure you do your research.

The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA, Inc) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization of chiropractic family practitioners dedicated to advancing public awareness and attainment of the chiropractic family wellness lifestyle. Chiropractic practitioners can attain advanced credentials specifically related to the treatment of children and pregnant women. There are a number of courses offered through the ICPA.  Depending on the specific type of certification achieved, the practitioner will have the appropriate credentials listed after their names.  In addition, they are listed as having a Pediatric Certification on the ICPA membership referral directory (ICPA, 2010) . The ICPA also allows you to search for a pediatric chiropractor in your area.

To find out more

The ICPA4kids website has posted numerous articles on chiropractic care as it relates to children with otitis media.  Please note that the author has not personally read nor necessarily endorses these articles, but merely is providing a source for additional information.  In addition —as mentioned before— there are many news stories and video clips posted on YouTube as well.  Simply type “chiropractic and ear infections” and you will have hours of material to review.

Many discussions about the effectiveness, or lack thereof, regarding chiropractic and ear infection are based on the pilot study conducted by Joan Fallon.  Below is a link to this article should you want to do your own review.

Solid information about the effectiveness of chiropractic in treating ear infections may be right around the corner.  A research study is currently underway and being conducted by  David Eisenberg, MD. This work is in progress under a grant from the Consortial Center for Chiropractic Research, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM).
